Woodhaven has been a participant in the Campbell’s Soup Labels-for-Education program for more than 30 years. We receive barcodes from churches, Christian Women’s Fellowship groups and individuals from all over the country. In the past, we have “purchased” 15-passenger vans, which we converted to be wheelchair accessible. We received four vans from the Campbell’s program through the years, which were used to take our men and women to their jobs, church, shopping, and other community outings. However, in 2004, Campbell’s stopped offering the 15-passenger vans.

We are often asked, now that we are no longer saving for vans, what exactly do we use the Campbell’s UPCs for? We generally place one order a year to get technology equipment or day program supplies. Here is what we have ordered since 2004.

2004: Our first order was for a variety of items for our Day Program: craft supplies (paints, brushes, etc.), games (horseshoes, deck tennis) and a karaoke machine. That same year we also purchased seven computers for a much-needed upgrade in our office. The computers that were replaced were given to several of the individuals we serve who had expressed an interest in having a computer in their homes.

2005: Our main order for 2005 was a video projector. We have used this to hold movie days during Day Program, as well as for staff training purposes and presentations about our mission. In 2005 we also ordered an overhead projector to use for staff training and a paper cutter that is used by the Day Program for their scrapbooking and for other uses in the office.

2006: We ordered five laptop computers – one for each of our Program Managers. These laptop computers allow the Program Managers (who act as the primary social workers for the individuals we serve, each overseeing the support plans for 20-25 individuals) to have access to necessary files, forms and information as they visit each of the people we serve in their homes. Although the Program Managers each have an office in our administrative building, 75% of their work is done in the field. The laptops have made a big difference in allowing them to use their time more efficiently and better serve the individuals in their care.

2007: We ordered 2 additional laptops, one for a sixth Program Manager and one for a Registered Nurse on our staff.

2008: We ordered craft supplies and a rhythm instrument set for our Community Integration/Day Program. We also ordered a camcorder for the Community Integration Coordinator to be able to record special activities and trips to provide lasting memories for the participants.

The Campbell’s Soup program continues to be very valuable to Woodhaven’s mission, providing us with many items that would not otherwise be able to be purchased. Please keep those Campbell’s UPC barcodes coming! (Remember, they no longer take front labels!)
